@lanodan Well, yes HTTP isn't that good of a protocol, and I haven't investigated Gemini either. But the point I make, is that gemtext is horribly terrible compared to stuff we had 30 years ago, and the "gemini community" doesn't want to change that. I have seen at least several discussions in gemini browsers that went like this:

"Maybe we should add markdown support to our browser""No, this is gemini, we use gemtext here and anything else is supplemental data"

@lanodan Doesn't look like anyone actually cares about the transport side that much, from what I see the thing most people focusing on when talking about "why gemini" is the simplicity of gemtext. From my short wanderings around, I haven't seen anything but gemtext. It's like HTTP: it technically doesn't imply HTML, but nobody really cares about using HTTP mainly as a transport for some other format (for end users, API's is another thing).

@lanodan Gemtext is the case of trying to make stuff simpler, and in the end making stuff too simple. For the love of god, I'd rather return to BBS'es rather than use gemini as my main information transport.

@lanodan btw, here's the equivalent search for webkit's bugtracker but it isn't as amusing, because as far as I can see it only dates back to 2005. I guess congratulations for Mozilla for preserving history.https://bugs.webkit.org/buglist.cgi?bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&order=Bug%20Number&query_format=advanced

@lanodan For addition of new emojis, it's often required to justify the need of a new one, usually by giving examples of existing use of substitutes. The (WIP) proposal for adding more body parts (including penises and shit) is great in that regard.

@lanodan I said that everything that would run Linux should have it. Not only desktops. But I feel like it is going to start from desktops and bigger devboards looking at how things are going at the moment.

@lanodan Yes, I do agree that "everything that will probably run Linux" should use a standard boot sequence and device enumeration. Just the problem is, there are still almost no vendors that could agree to standardize. Sure, SiFive could do something, but there are currently not enough reason to do so. Though I hope that RISC-V consortium will tackle this problem when there get to be more than 2 CPU's that would be usable for desktops.

@lanodan Sorry, might have worded my argument weirdly there. I mean to say that ISA's should not have a booting system that is standard across all processors of the ISA. In other words, I think that defining the bootup system in the ISA is not a good idea.

@lanodan Apparently x86 chromebooks use U-Boot to load coreboot, so not super rare. But the point is, booting procedures should not be tied to the ISA. This ties the ISA to a single purpose, which RISC-V is explicitly against.

@lanodan As it was designed "for everything" it is a bit useless to have standard bootup and device enumeration. For example Pinecil doesn't need any of that. It's not like e.g. x86 has it either. Yes, BIOS is a standard, but x86 isn't tied to BIOS (or UEFI). You could build an 8086 computer that doesn't use either of those. But if vendors would agree on a standard for "not microcontroller" type of RISC-V systems, then it would be great.

@lanodan It is there, just the scrolling timeline that most implementations present leaves it to unknowingly ignoring and forgetting unread stuff. If somebody did an actually e-mail like client for AP then it would be the least usable thing ever.
