@Sandra Yeah, I looked into all of the 32 directories I dropped. Interesting to see a few WebKitCache subdirectories since you also mentioned older browsers.

@Sandra I wonder whether I can delete ~/.cache/flatpak; some of these directories really do look a lot more like local storage instead of an ephemeral cache.

@Sandra Haha, __itself__ made me laugh. Now I'm looking at the .cache entries, oldest first. Anything with a last modified candidate older than 2020 is a good candidate to go.

@penguin42 @penguin42 Hm, apparently something resets it every time. Restarting Firefox and it's back at the bigger size. So maybe it's the smart sizing? I set browser.cache.disk.smart_size_enabled to false and now the setting sticks. And the cache directory is down to 284MiB. Yay!

@penguin42 Interesting idea. Do you know more? browser.cache.disk gives me about two dozen options and no documentation. free_space_hard_limit… capacity… smart_size_enabled… 😮 I guess capacity it is!http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.cache.disk.capacityApparently somebody overwrote the default value with 1048576, which is 1024×1024 in KiB, so 1GiB? Resetting that to the default value of … 256000. Thanks!

I was reading a post on Gemini that mentioned ~/.cache containing 1.3GiB of data. Preposterous, I thought.But then:
$ du -sh .cache/2.0G .cache/
The largest of these is the browser:
1.1G .cache/mozilla/
But still… Weird! And as the post goes on to say, unlike what you might think given the name, you probably can't just trash it all. It depends on the applications.

@takeonrules How does elfeedd handle unread counts? My primary requirement was "no unread count" – which is why Jupiter is a Planet, a static site where old news falls off at the end, read or unread, it doesn't matter. That really fixes my "fear of missing out". I remember the Feeder app showing me hundreds and thousands of unread posts, keeping them for me. No more! @PresGas @solderpunk

@thor Yeah. I see it in my family, too. Some of us are independent and love to be on our own two feet, and others I see longing for stronger family ties. I used to joke that some family members would have felt much, much better in a traditional large family with dozens and dozens of cousins. As for myself, I've slowly learned to open myself up, learned to invest the emotional labour required (oh how hard it has been and how blind I was). All of it… ever so slowly…@Sandra

@takeonrules I remember @Halfjack writing that he was interested in all of a person and thus was not interested in RPG-only blogs and social media accounts. He wanted it all, or nothing at all. It took me a long time to get it.@Sandra

@solderpunk I wrote two (!) feed aggregators in 2020. I thought this was going to be the year when RSS and Atom finally went the way of the Dodo, but no. Surprisingly, happily, jubilantly, they're still there! Happy New Year, bloggers and posters and feedsters!https://alexschroeder.ch/wiki/2020-12-31_My_feed_aggregators

@thor Yeah, not to glorify the old days, the punishments for serfs leaving the land they were bound and all the other little details… definitely nope nope nope. But more community, more community efforts, I imagine this is great. At the same time, I look around and housing coops, gardening coops, and other community efforts, and there are narcissists and wanna-be bosses there, too. Perhaps there is simply no escape.@Sandra

@portpupper I've started listening to the tapes from 1920 and these are old 78rpm records, full of noise. So I felt that I definitely did not need FLAC. Also, when I tried downloading it all, I ran out of disk space! 😆

@Sandra So hard! Finding like-minded people seems to be one of the hardest things in life. :blobsad: I want to add something about having to bend with the wind to adapt to the social environment one lives in, and the constant exultation of individualism we are surrounded with, making it hard for us to change in order to adapt to others, making it harder to find both lovers and partners and friends the older we are. But yeah, community feed aggregating. I like the idea!

@hansw We buy a lot of food stuff and get it home delivered every 10 days or so. As there's always produce around to cook, we haven't done restaurant home delivery. Not once. I thought we'd do a lot of that, but apparently, not at all. I'd love to get some Japanese food delivered one of these days.

An interesting change for CAPCOM (an important feed aggregator for Gemini): "On the first day of each month, a cron job runs the … pipeline to randomly select 100 unique feeds … Those feeds are then aggregated by CAPCOM for the remainder of the month. Thisway the scope of the CAPCOM instance can grow without limit over time, but the actual amount of new content to be found each day should remain fairly constant over time."I like it, @solderpunk!#gemini
