    I was reading a post on Gemini that mentioned ~/.cache containing 1.3GiB of data. Preposterous, I thought.But then:

    $ du -sh .cache/2.0G .cache/

    The largest of these is the browser:

    1.1G .cache/mozilla/

    But still… Weird! And as the post goes on to say, unlike what you might think given the name, you probably can't just trash it all. It depends on the applications.

      @kensanata You can change the ondisk cache size in about:config; I'm pretty sure you can make it smaller; now that might be different if it's site-data rather than cache but I'm not sure where that gets stored; but again you can limit that.

      @penguin42 Interesting idea. Do you know more? browser.cache.disk gives me about two dozen options and no documentation. free_space_hard_limit… capacity… smart_size_enabled… 😮 I guess capacity it is!http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.cache.disk.capacityApparently somebody overwrote the default value with 1048576, which is 1024×1024 in KiB, so 1GiB? Resetting that to the default value of … 256000. Thanks!

      @penguin42 @penguin42 Hm, apparently something resets it every time. Restarting Firefox and it's back at the bigger size. So maybe it's the smart sizing? I set browser.cache.disk.smart_size_enabled to false and now the setting sticks. And the cache directory is down to 284MiB. Yay!

      @Sandra Haha, __itself__ made me laugh. Now I'm looking at the .cache entries, oldest first. Anything with a last modified candidate older than 2020 is a good candidate to go.

      @kensanata Running Baobab on it makes it pretty clear that it’s Mozilla at 3.8 gigs.

      Pip is also a pretty bad culprit. Pip is a horrible program, anytime I see something is made with Python I heave and sob of grief—moreso because I have to deal with Python’s environment than the language itself—or should I say __itself__.

      Then other browsers. Qutebrowser half a gig, chromium a third of a gig, epiphany a fifth. Haven’t used some of those in a long long time. Mypaint uses 57M which is less than I thought it would. I still have an old 15M icedove cache for some reason even though I haven’t used that app in decades. Common-lisp and gnome-builder are also present (from when I tried to build that oauth app before I got wise to the life-changing magic of oathtool).

      @Sandra I wonder whether I can delete ~/.cache/flatpak; some of these directories really do look a lot more like local storage instead of an ephemeral cache.

      @Sandra Yeah, I looked into all of the 32 directories I dropped. Interesting to see a few WebKitCache subdirectories since you also mentioned older browsers.

      @kensanata Hold off!

      My ~/.cache/krita, for example, has a mod date of sometime in 2019 but inside of it are newer things!
