The weird hyperloop thing projet has completed its first test run. https://edition.cnn.com/2020/11/08/tech/virgin-hyperloop-passengers/index.html?utm_source=twCNN&utm_medium=social&utm_term=video&utm_content=2020-11-11T08%3A16%3A06

    ... With 2 passengers.... Going at 100mph.

    This is a joke.

    1. Virgin Hyperloop completes first test with actual passengers
      from Matt McFarland, CNN Business
Virgin Hyperloop gave the first ride on its test track Sunday in Las Vegas, but it will be years before the public can potentially take a high-speed ride on a hyperloop.

Meanwhile in a lot of countries, Japan, China, but also my own country, France, we've been using high-speed trains for decades. In France the average speed of the TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) is 200mph. And we're working on even faster trains. Also, trains are cheaper, they don't need a very expensive installation of vacuum sealed tubes, and they carry way more passengers.

Fuck the hyperloop, all my homies hate the hyperloop.

@dolfsquare I agree on a lot of what you say, but the 100 mph speed limit seems to be due entirely to the length of the track. Presumably it could be much faster on a longer route.

"Virgin Hyperloop says its track is 500 meters long, limiting how fast the pods can go."

But then one could joke about how they only built 500 m...

@manchot @dolfsquare This! When you look closely every single Elon Musk business is some way to funnel public funding into his private pockets. He chases incentives, I'm pretty convinced he doesn't care at all for the "engineering" part but he's smart enough to know that by playing Tony Stark he can get all the funding and support he wants

@manchot @dolfsquare Of all these SpaceX is the less scammy one. They have actual rockets, they can actually carry things and people to low orbit, sure all this was delivered beyond schedule but it exists and it works.

@manchot @jkb I agree with that, pretty sure cutting the middleman would be more cost efficient as SpaceX is a for-profit company.

Innovation happened to come from SpaceX's side though. I don't know to what extent NASA's ambitions prior to SpaceX's inventions could have led to such progress in the field.

@dolfsquare @manchot There is a huge difference here: as an administration staffed mostly by scientists and engineers who have "failure is not an option" as a motto, they are bound to slow processes and standards.

By their own admission, having SpaceX do the research and development led to much faster and cheaper results than what could be dreamed in a full-NASA project
