@lanodan riding on the sidewalks is stupid for literally everyone involved. you'll go slower and risk hitting pedestrians, and it's often illegal...I'm all for spitting in the face of someone who spends 2k on some insane carbon shit and tells you you must as well, but some of this is pretty idiotic. Learning to change a tire is a necessity if you plan to commute; I cannot count the number of times I flatted on a sharp rock or whatever coming home. If you have tire levers and a small pump, and keep a spare tube or two with you, it's easy. If you get your wheels trued maybe once per year or two, an old steel road bike is perfectly fine on shit city roads, as long as you're not glued to the saddle when you hit a pothole at 15mph, which literally no one should be

@slowfallinward Be careful when reading please and note that I'm not JWZ and live in France instead (so roads aren't so full of potholes).Riding on sidewalks is something you sometimes _have_ to do because crossing can be seriously dangerous at times. Also, you're not racing so you should slow down on it (some sidewalks here have small dusty gravel so it's easy to loose control).Learning to change a tire is useful and that wasn't his point, his point was that taking it to the shop instead of doing it is a good idea (a side-effect is that they could also notice if something is slightly wrong on your bike).I don't think I had a flat tire in a serious while, I think it happened on my previous bike and I had to change the whole tube because it was completely fucked (I think I rolled on a piece of glass right after a turn). And yeah, jockey-ride (horse-riding term…) is something one should absolutely learn when riding to not need shit like shockers and be fine on non flat roads.

@lanodan Yeah, I was responding mostly to the linked post, not with the assumption you were an uncritical proponent of -everything- in it. Sorry if it came off like thatI agree that in very dense/unsafe areas it may be a bit hard to ride in traffic and resorting to the sidewalk is inevitable. I do not agree that it should -ever- be done outside of extenuating circumstances like that, because of my experience in -less- dense cities. Besides what I said above, it cultivates the expectation for drivers that bikes belong on the sidewalk, which means you get shitty murderous behavior for being on the road as you ought at a significantly higher rate. I've had people, in cities where it's very much illegal to be on the sidewalk, scream at me to get on the sidewalk while I was riding on a residential street. Re: speed, as I see it, if I can go 20mph the whole way I'd rather do it, and I'd rather most people were able to bike this way if they chose. It makes bikes a significantly more viable -car replacement- if they can approximate car speeds in the cityHIs advice about lights is also pretty crap -- even my Fenix, a metal brick with 2 18650s in it, is removable and pocketable is removable in all of 5 seconds, and makes riding at night several orders of magnitude safer...Taking the bike in to be looked at now and again is probably good, but I just disagree with a flat tire being serious enough to pay someone else to fix for 4x the cost of a tube or more

@slowfallinward The article is from 2008, bike lights at the time were either basically bolted and cabled with a dynamo or came with large-ass batteries so the whole thing definitely doesn't fit in your pocket and would need a special place in your backpack (not to mention that some stores are assholes regarding taking any items inside their store). And car drivers being assholes is why I'm quite thinking about buying some painball gun with washable paint (annoy them but it can't backfire).

@slowfallinward @lanodan I've ridden bikes a lot in the UK and I entirely agree. Non-empty pavement is no place for bikes for everyone's safety. Pedestrians move so much less predictably and you hurt a pedestrian way more in a crash. Bike lanes are the ideal, though, with any more separation than a painted line (even just a 5cm soft curb will discourage drivers while allowing fairly free access to the road if you need to turn left)

@steph @slowfallinward I've yet to see bike lanes protected with curbs without them being actually horribly placed on the sidewalk. And good luck crossing a 4+ traffic lane with almost no tricolor lights to let you pass. And literally in the Center of Rennes if I'm at the wrong side of the river I'm stuck with either crossing via some small ass bridges made for pedestrians or slowly riding on the sidewalk.
